BURAS, La. — A Buras man with a history of violent offenses pled guilty this week to several charges stemming from a 2024 incident involving his elderly mother.
On September 12, 2024, deputies responded to a residence in Buras after receiving a complaint from Mary Hill, age 85, who reported that her son, Shane Hill, age 56, was acting violently and under the influence of narcotics. According to investigators, Hill allegedly caused significant property damage and violated a standing protective order issued after a prior domestic battery case.
Deputies say Hill destroyed the front porch and door of the home and home furnishing, causing an estimated $3,700 in damage, including a house door valued at $150, front steps worth $550, and an antique Steiner dresser valued at $3,000. Due to Hill’s history of violence and prior interactions with law enforcement, additional units were requested. When deputies arrived, Hill reportedly locked the front door and fled through the rear exit into a heavily wooded area before being apprehended after resisting arrest.
The trial of this case started on December 8, 2025, when the Jury was sworn in; but before the victim, Mary Hill, was called to testify she recanted her initial statement, claiming her son “didn’t do anything.”
Hill has multiple prior offenses, some involving his mother. Prosecutors noted that such reversals are common in domestic cases, making it challenging for the District Attorney’s Office to secure convictions and provide protection for victims.
Despite the new statement of the Defendant’s Mother the defendant pled guilty to Simple Criminal Damage over $1,000 but less than $50,000, Violation of a Protective Order, two counts of Resisting an Officer, and Cruelty to the Infirmed and was sentenced to 2 years in the Department of Corrections. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jason Napoli before Judge Michael Clement.
