Charles Ballay, the District Attorney of Plaquemines Parish, reports that on June 19, 2019, Jonathan Jason, age 39, of Ironton, LA was convicted of two counts of Forcible Rape, Sexual Battery, Attempted Aggravated Rape, two counts of Oral Sexual Battery, and two counts of Cruelty to Juveniles, these crimes occurred in Plaquemines Parish between 2000-2018. Jason was indicted on August 24, 2018 by the grand jury based on an investigation that revealed that, starting in early 2006, Jason had repeatedly raped the victim for more than a decade, starting at the age of 5 years old. The victim in the case came forward in April 2018 after her parents learned of the sexual assaults.
Trial began on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, before Judge Michael Clement. The prosecution was led by 1st Assistant District Attorney Robert M. White and Assistant District Attorney Edward McGowan and Assistant District Attorney Sarah A. Tesvich, assisted by Ms. Tamara Davis, Ms. Viktorija Dekovic, Ms. Rae Riley and Ms. Bonnie Bondi of the District Attorney’s Office. Jury selection consumed the ¬first two day(s) of trial. On the 7th day, the State began closing arguments.
Detective Holly Hardin and Detective Paul Durnin of Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office handled the investigation of the case, which involved three victims, two of which were children.
On Wednesday, June 19, 2019, the Jury found the defendant guilty after approximately 8 hours of deliberation.
Sentencing is set for September 4, 2019 before Judge Michael Clement.
